studying

i never thought i would ever want to work. When i was in elementary, i told myself that by the time i get to university, i will love school work. Perfect example for a chronic procrastinator. I am however spending 12-24 hours in the library on sundays, and around 5 hours a day doing homework and reading. I had always felt that i lack an aim and a reason to help me latch onto that desire to study. Lately however, the more i question what i am doing in the first place, the harder i want to work. At the moment, i am enrolled into the GWSB (george washington school of business), and to my surprise, it ranks 38 in the US. The international business major is ranked 18 in the country, and happens to be the only major the Kuwaiti government offers a merit scholarship for. All i need to do is decide i want to take it (easy) and achieve a 3.0 average (for a freshman, ummmm ?). Anyways, that is my reason at the moment. 2,800 dollars a month for pocket money? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? but i wont complain, it is worth the sleep deprivation, the 15 pound weight drop, the depression, the loneliness, the anxiety, and last but not least, some selflessness. I am sure however, that when i do receive the scholarship, it will all be worth it.

Numark NS7

i have been wanting a DJ set for quite a while now. It took me a while to find the right set, and whenever i thought i found what is perfect for me, i find something that exceeds expectations. I have come across what i think is the perfect set, and my final decision. Im going to move into my own place soon, which gives me ton of space, and the chance to organize things however i want them to be. Being the technology freak that i am, i want to make my own semi-insulated chilling room, which works as a study, and a studio. The turntables are designed in cooperation with Serato, which are the number 1 computer software DJ programer. What they come up with is truly genius. see for yourself
Cost: aprox $1,300

Ellen Degeneres instead of Paula Abdul

When Ellen DeGeneres was announced as the new "American Idol" judge on Wednesday, fans were up in the air and Randy Jackson was pumped — but what did Paula Abdul think about the news?

Im in G-dub

to whoever reads my blog, if anyone :P, i have moved into my university. George Washington University has a very good reputation, which sometimes begs the question, how did i get in? non of it matters, what matters is that I'm here and I love it. The city is truly the place to be, in terms of having a lot to do. Whatever it is you are into, you will definitely find it in DC, except for a beautiful coastline :(. Non-the-less, im going to take up my blog again and start updating everyone more often. For now, i am dreading the amount of work i already have.

i failed my driving test

to make the long story short, my dad does not want to get me wasta (connection).
i got up at 6:30 and got there at 7, the cop made me wait for 30 minutes before taking the test on paper (which btw was in arabic). i scored 90% on that test and passed it, even though one of the questions i got wrong was the following (what is the minimum speed limit for heavy trucks on the 6th ring road). IM NEVER DRIVING A HEAVY WEIGHT TRUCK !
now its around 8:10, and the cop told me to wait outside until i get my turn, scorching heat, for 30 minutes before i got pissed and left the place to realize that i didn't have to wait at all. the main issue here is that the attitude the cops use is violent, as if they are doing their job just for the sake of being payed, or else they would rather make you their slave much more. i left the place where i took the (visionary exam ? nathari) and payed a guy 10kd to take his car and drive it in for the driving test.
i got in alone, and waited for my turn. the cop was sitting in an air conditioned room sipping on his tea, and did not bother to come sit next to me, simply pointed at a parallel parking spot. i was like hey, thats not so bad, until he got out of the room to make the gap smaller (barely fitting the car's length). i got the car in but it was slightly on the white line, so i had to correct it, but thats when he came out of his room and DEMANDED my papers, only to write that i failed. that test took 2 minutes, no more, no less.
meanwhile, a girl that came with her father and some guy that is on top of the hierarchy, got her license without even getting into a car, all of which i witnessed.
are you trying to convince me that that girl is safer on the roads than me?

anyways, I'm only writing about this to pour out my frustration, because i have waited to get my driving license for a while now, and being in kuwait, its the only key to a little bit of freedom. life in kuwait has not changed, in fact it only got worse. although i miss home and my friends when I'm away, i do not miss the big chunk of the arrogant population, or the whole connection (wasta) situation, or the amount of lifelessness people have in general. work, eat, sleep !   not for me, i am definitely not living here when i am done with university. i have come too far to start living a primitive life all again that would probably dumb me down.

by now you are probably thinking im just pissed about the driving test (not that I'm not) but its not just that, its the accumulation of things.

(sigh)

things did not go smooth today. i woke up early cause i had to open a bank account, tackle the scholarship situation, and get some driving lessons plan started.

the bank (NBK):
i went to the qurtuba branch since thats where i live. i went in, and the lady at the counted was really nice to call me up without issuing a ticket (mind you there weren't that many people there anyways). i told her i wanted to open up al shabab account so i can deposit the i3ana money (government payment to university students) and to deposit my savings. i never had a kuwaiti account, i had a swiss one for the past 3 years (after all they are the best at banking). the lady told me to issue a ticket which was 2 numbers away, so i was like ok , cool, 10 minute wait tops. the time on the ticket was 9:37, and i got my turn at 10:15. i was already pissed, but took it easy, did not complain a bit (even though the two people behind their desks were probably chatting to someone since they had no customers). i sat down and told her what i wanted, after another 10 minutes of her barely finding her way around (THE COMPUTER FROM MARS) she told me that i had once opened an al azraq account, although i never picked it up from the bank or used it. it was my moms idea to open that account in the farwaniya branch because she had a friend there. now i have to go to farwaniya, close the account (my mom needs to be with me) and get back to open an al shabab account. thats around one hour completely wasted.

ministry of higher education:
i spent around 20 minutes getting my transcripts and all that together, along with my GWU acceptance package, then i headed to shuwaikh port where the ministry of higher education is. i went into the first building to find an all women faculty (the type that believe every mans intentions are bad to every women, you know what i mean). so just being there, i felt disgusted, but non-the-less, the lady sent me to building number 4 telling me i need to equivilate my IB first. i went to that building and waited around 15 minutes until i got my turn. i went up to the lady and told her i had been studying in switzerland for the past 3 years and she told me to give her A SECOND to ask someone on the phone about my situation (as if i am asking for rocket science). after a 10 minute conversation that included 1 minute of questions that had to do with my case and the other 9 about the other party on the phone's dilemma with whatever. she started by saying this in arabic " to begin with, you have to have your actual diploma to equivilate it, (which comes out in on around july 5-6th), but the thing is that i doubt they offer equivalency to people that studied abroad ". i gave her the stare of death, and explained to her what the IB diploma was. she then told me that in any case, nothing can be done now.  now its 12 oclock, and i had gotten nothing done.

driving lessons (morror):
my test is on june 2nd, and i wanted to make sure i know how to do all the parallel parking and whatnot that i will be tested on, so my father told me you might as well schedule 8 lessons or so to practice. i went to the farwaniya driving school which is on the way to the airport, and they had just closed. the security guy told me to come back tomorrow at 7.

conclusions:
i wasted around 3:30-4:00 hours chasing non existing tasks. for a guy thats an organized freak (to a certain degree :p) thats a lot of time gone to waste. i also made my friends who were waiting for me at corniche feel like i didn't care about them (they didn't complain but i promised i would spend the day with them at the gym, pool, and for lunch)

im hoping that tomorrow will be a better day!

Winner of "The Best Job in the World" competition Ben Southall of Britain poses for a photograph prior to the winner's announcement on Hamilton Island, about 950km (590 miles) north of Brisbane, May 6, 2009. Southall beat 15 other finalists in the tourism promotion competition aimed at attracting visitors to Australia's northeast tropical state of Queensland. He won A$150,000 ($110,000) and the role of "Island Caretaker" on the Great Barrier Reef for six months.  link

yes, you guessed it, it's time. University answers are pouring in, and here are the facts:
Bentley: wait listed
George Washington: wait listed
University of Miami: wait listed for september, accepted for january
Lynn: accepted
Rollins: accepted
Fordham: accepted
university of san diego: pending
University of Souther California: pending
Babson: rejected

i might not refer to my computer a lot in the next month and a half because to get into the wait listed universities, i have to actually try hard. Other than that, half my time will be spent at the gym with a fresh new basket of supplements :D.
PS: the 800+ visits on my website is mostly because of the link to the past IB papers.

Emirates new inflight entertainment

Even after my third year studying in switzerland, i still vary the flights i take. From Qatar Air, to BA, Emirates, and Lufthansa. And no, if your thinking why don't i take Kuwait AIrways, just no!
anyways, i decided to take Emirates to zurich this time, and take a 3:30 hour train to the mountains in gstaad where i study. The plane to switzerland was fine and did its job perfectly. However, the plane going back is pushing onboard entertainment to another level. I was in economy, but still, the screen was a 10-12 inch i believe, with a colored screen remote control. The collection of movies, tv series, tv channels, and music has grown even bigger now. Not only so, but you can insert a USB memory device into a socket next to the screen, be it a hard drive or a flash memory stick. Also, on the bottom left hand of the seat, there is an electricity socket for your laptop or whatever you want to charge up.
The legroom has gotten better, however emirates still have not mastered their seats, because they are very, how should i say this, tiring. Its difficult to sit on them because unless you recline the, you are sitting in a position that is almost tilting forward a tiny bit. Your bum and the bottom of your backbone (tailbone) starts to really hurt by the end of a 6 hours flight which is really uncomfortable. I don't eat out due to my diet, therefore i did not try their food.
This post was meant to be about the inflight entertainment, and after watching (pride and glory, and rock n rolla), I realized what an amazing system they had.

im back home

HELLOO PEOPLE OF KUWAIT..
i've been here for about 10 days now, but i am enjoying doing nothing way to much to post. My friends have school at the moment, so y day activities have been quite limited. However, my IB exams are coming up soon, mocks are as early as april 2nd, therefore i should dedicate an entire week to studying. There are quite a lot of things on my to do list, starting with shopping for myself, and other things like making sure I'm back on top of the PS3 situation by updating my games. The weather has been very disappointing the past 3-4 days, however today is a different story, it is beautiful! hopefully it will stay like that so i can take the boat out.

4.3.09

jet set protection

Gstaad, Switzerland is known to be a place where people forget about the word money, and consider life only by how much you do or own. This is my view only of course, i see it as a place where people meet to show off what they have made out of their lives. How are you going to protect them when its snowy, and the bad guys have tough SUV's? non other than modified BMW X3s. I took this picture with my phone which explains the quality, and the limited view of the car, i was worried the lady cop will get out of the car ans shoot me if she found out i took a picture of her ride.

the rescue of the spoilt brats

My school is filled with rich kids, spoilt brats that like to rebel every now and then and break the law. Snowboarding, and skiing daily is a part of the winter term at my school, and yesterday was a day these 3 kids will never forget. They decided to go (off piste) on a black slope, which is the most difficult. 30 minutes late for check-in with their teacher, they call him crying for help. the evening was planned like so, (ski, dinner, prize giving for races last week, night ski). They got lost at the first block, around 4 pm, and were found through a chopper rescue at 9. Can you imagine how scared these 15 year olds were :P? well, they are all alive and well, but will be punished severely because going off slope is a serious offense to the school rules. I shared this with you because i shot a video of the chopper landing 15 meters away from us after they had been found, very dramatic, yes. People were clapping and cheering though, my hat goes of to the rescue workers who did this in very little visibility because of the fog, during the night.
funny thing however, chopper rescues start at 10,000 francs= 2,500Kd
Update: the bill will be 21,000 CHF distributed equally amongst the three students. thats around 1,765 Kd per student ... damn

The Oscars (opening)

I did not get to watch the oscars, but the opening was created by a genius

new blog (kuwaiti style)

i have a new project in the making. Basically, three years ago, i had very little sense of style, moda, interest in appearance, health, and very out of date. Over the duration of the last sumer, and most of the last 3 months in 2008, i spent time reading, exploring what i like, who i really am, and most important of all, i made a promise to myself. CHANGE, was the main thing on my mind, the first project was to loose weight, and i did. I now adopt a more healthy lifestyle of absolutely no drinking, and VERY little smoking (one shisha a month). With a lot of trial and error, and after living in europe for 3 years, i have become more interested in what is around me as well.
this new project vows to help out the average kuwaiti guy learn what's in for casual wear, formal clothing, what's new in technology, what look is back in (retro and whatnot), the newest accessories, health tips, investment tips, where to buy in kuwait, some items for sale, and a lot of giveaways. changing the way i am has made me happier, healthier, more self confident, and (luckier).
I don't expect to be the next GQ or the kuwaiti version of it, however, something of the likes.
the first post which i will write up as soon as i have the time, is about the ideal diet for the healthy teen to midage young man. one diet will be for the average man, and the other will be for the muscle builders.
stick around for more.

Emailing while asleep

The mails themselves were perhaps not up to the woman’s waking standard; each was in a random mix of upper and lower case characters, badly formatted and containing odd expressions. One read: “Come tomorrow and sort this hell hole out. Dinner and drinks, 4.pm. Bring wine and caviar only.” Another said simply: “What the…”

The writers of the report have dubbed this new variation of sleepwalking ‘zzz-mailing’. They say: “We believe writing an email after turning the computer on, connecting to the Internet and remembering the password displayed by our patient is novel. To our knowledge this type of complex behaviour requiring coordinated movements has not been reported before in sleepwalking. She was shocked when she saw these emails, as she did not recall writing them. She did not have any history of night terr ors or sleepwalking as a child.”

2009 E class coupe

Ok so the E class was released not so long ago, but wait? what is that? they have a coupe edition? yes, a whole new concept. I must say, they have done a good job with the car. I like the C class quite a lot, and hit has some of that in it. The headlamps are for some reason uncorrelated, which makes it seem like mercedes tried to hard to come up with a new style. the contours along the side are very attractive, whether they were put there for aerodynamics or not. The car will get the same engine treatment as the rest of the mercedes' out there, 4, 6, and 8 cylinders.
Here is the question though, why a coupe of the E class, when you have one for the C, the CL, SL, SLK, and CLK? would you make a coupe out of the equivalent 5 series BMW? Thats where things start looking clearer. You see what i think is that MB realized that BMW is making a hell-ova profit from the 3 series coupe, which is why this looks quite similar.
all in all however, i see it as a better looker than the beamer 335i (still, M3 all the way)

New phone

I do admit that i have a mild-serious case of technology addiction. I got the E71 in during the summer, but i was reassured that Nokia still don't have the user friendliness of other phones out there. Every time i pick my phone up, i'm like oh biggie!
The iphone is a lot of phone with its thousands if not hundreds of thousands of apps. The camera is not amazing, but other than that, the web browser, wifi, 3g, and music is all excellent. However i had purchased a 16gb touch 2nd generation.
The blackberry bold was the second on my list, which would be the ideal substitute to my e71. The bbm service is what attracted me the most. It's kind of like messaging 24/7 with a fixed cost. I do need that since I'm rarely in kuwait. It has most of the good stuff in e71, if not all, but i will be getting the bbm.

this is where i am stuck, should i stick to my phone, get the blackberry, or just get a NORMAL phone to act to the purpose it was fit for ?

back to the land of cheese

Unfortunately, I'm back here in switzerland for another 2 months. That depresses me quite a lot because at this point in my life, having spent the 3rd consecutive year away from home, I'm beginning to get extremely homesick. I don't enjoy being in kuwait for long, however as long as i have y friends and family next to e, to be able to follow how many new cousins i have if any. This trip back home i just had, i met 5 cousins that i didn't know existed (babies). I'm missing on a lot, and that alone is a great contributer to feeling down. even my sister' s husband, i have only met 4-5 times, and she is y only sister, i would have wanted to be a part of the family in each step. At least i went back for two days for the wedding.
during this trip, i didn't do much but hang out with my friends in kuwait and took the boat out twice (no fish) however i flew to my house in amman, jordan for two days, (lots of memories there during the summer). i later went to beirut, lebanon for a week with a huge group that decided they wanted to join within days of travel. New year's there was great, got to spend time with my old pal which got expelled from Rosey, amir is his name. And last but not least i went to dubai a day before i arrived to Switzerland simply because i did not get to see my father for that long.
What i need to do for this term. well, its the last official term, so i need to edit all my pieces of work, coursework/extended essay/notes, and so on. However it is an extremely difficult thing to do especially since its an average of -7 outside. very depressing weather in other words.
hey, at least i get to snowboard everyday for two months, yaaay (sarcasm).
nonetheless, heres a picture of the view out of my window:
